Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul, and Mary Stands Up to National Organization for Marriage

Courage Campaign is circulating a cease-and-desist letter that Peter Yarrow of the Peter, Paul, and Mary group wrote to the National Organization of Marriage during NOM's recent disastrous "Summer for Marriage" tour.  Without securing permission from Peter, Paul, and Mary, NOM played the group's version of Woodie Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" during its rallies around the nation.

Peter Yarrow informs NOM that its anti-gay message is "directly contrary to the advocacy position Peter, Paul & Mary have held for decades," and they want NOM to stop using recordings of their song.  The letter goes on to inform NOM,

We strongly support the rights of all gays and lesbians to enjoy the rights and rituals of marriage that are enjoyed by their straight counterparts, and consider the abridgement of this right contrary to the sense of equal protection and fairness inherent in, and implied by, the law, of the Constitution of the United States.

The letter and a thank-you note that you may sign to send to Peter Yarrow through Courage Campaign are at the latter's website.

The graphic is a photo of Peter, Paul, and Mary singing at the national Civil Rights march on Washington in 1963.
