Joshua McElwee commenting on Pope Francis's opening address to the Vatican colloquium on the complementarity of male and female:
"We now live in a culture of the temporary, in which more and more people are simply giving up on marriage as a public commitment," said Francis.
And yet as more and more opposite-sex couples give up on the idea of marriage as a public commitment, multitudes of same-sex couples are pleading for the right to strengthen their committed unions in civil marriages.
And the top leaders of the Catholic church are doing everything in their power to combat that right, to reject that right, to shove gay and lesbian human beings back into the closet, to announce that gay and lesbian people are not welcome in the Catholic community, to underscore that gay and lesbian human beings are intrinsically disordered, to make the lives of the children of gay parents miserable.
Go figure.
