I don't want Cinco de Mayo to pass by without posting this video to commemorate it: Mercedes Sosa and Joan Baez singing "Gracias a la Vida." The song was written by Chilean poet-musician Violeta Parra, and Mercedes Sosa was Argentine, but Joan Baez has Mexican roots through her father--hence the connection to Cinco de Mayo in my mind.
I adore this song and these women. I grieve that Violeta Parra was taken from us too soon, a reminder of the many, many women throughout history, especially women without power and money, whose talents would make the world so much richer, if these women ever had a chance to fulfill their gifts.
Happy Cinco de Mayo to readers everywhere. We celebrated earlier today by eating roast duck and chow fun with steamed pea shoots at a Chinese restaurant.
