People say Pope Francis' maliciously silly comments about gay priests are about underscoring that gay priests vowed to celibacy shouldn't be sexually active.— 𝚆𝚒𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚊𝚖 𝙳. 𝙻𝚒𝚗𝚍𝚜𝚎𝚢 (@wdlindsy) December 3, 2018
Fine. Priests both straight and gay who take vows of celibacy should not be sexually active, period. /1
But Francis did not say that because heterosexual priests violate their vows of chastity — and they do: ask scores of women throughout the world — the church should bar straight men from the priesthood. /2— 𝚆𝚒𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚊𝚖 𝙳. 𝙻𝚒𝚗𝚍𝚜𝚎𝚢 (@wdlindsy) December 3, 2018
This is about more than calling priests to live their vows of chastity. It's about scapegoating gay people and gay priests, in particular. It's about keeping alive an ugly, hateful, destructive blood-libel myth that gay men are sexual predators. /3— 𝚆𝚒𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚊𝚖 𝙳. 𝙻𝚒𝚗𝚍𝚜𝚎𝚢 (@wdlindsy) December 3, 2018
It's exceedingly ugly for the top leader of a major Christian communion to engage in this kind of scapegoating behavior. & it's not at all edifying to see so-called liberal Catholics who think the church should be more welcoming to LGBTQ folks spinning the malice in this way. /4— 𝚆𝚒𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚊𝚖 𝙳.
