In the “lines I wish I’d written category,” Attaturk commenting at Firedoglake this morning on the recent revelation that Indiana Congressman Mark Souder recorded an abstinence video in November 2009. With his mistress:
Far be it from me to avoid being the latest blogger to comment on last night’s primaries. In my defense, I don’t have a lot of mistresses or out-of-wedlock children available to help me make abstinence videos (Bristol Palin’s likely to soon to be released by Vivid Video).
While blaring this on his website:
I believe that Congress must fight to uphold the traditional values that undergird the strength of our nation. The family plays a fundamental role in our society. Studies consistently demonstrate that it is best for a child to have a mother and father, and I am committed to preserving traditional marriage, the union of one man and one woman.
The Bible, the Torah and the Koran all condemn homosexuality. During debate on the House floor, Democrats repeatedly called such a view bigoted, prejudiced and hateful. And they passed legislation that would force all Americans to share their view (the subordination of religious rights to sexual orientation rights).
In today’s climate, no one is comfortable talking about this issue. But I spoke out and voted against ENDA because I felt it was necessary. I am sickened that even our founding principles are under direct assault by the liberals in Washington, D.C.
As Brent Childers notes in a press release yesterday at the Faith in America website, Souder’s homophobic views have been particularly harmful to younger citizens struggling with issues of sexual orientation—and they do not adequately represent the religious traditions to which he appeals. Because they are designed to harm rather than heal the world.
And so it is all to the good that another hypocrite using religion as a screen behind which to hide as he throws stones at others while living a life that belies the values he professes has the screen pulled away. So that we can all see what has been going on behind the screen.
