It occurs to me once again to leave a note here underscoring that I am not deliberately ignoring most comments left in threads here. They are all very welcome, and I am reading and benefiting from them all.
I do occasionally respond to a comment when it seems important that I do so for one reason or another. I hope no one feels slighted or that I'm playing favorites if you've said something and I've been silent.
The long and short of it is, I simply don't have loads of (extra) energy lately. I'm pushing myself to post, because so much that's happening right now seems important to be looked at and commenting on. But I don't find reserves of energy to do a lot of commenting in response to your welcome comments here, and for that, I apologize.
My spirits are low. It is open season — all over again — on queer people in the Catholic church, and the ugliness weighs on me, heavily so. What is happening with the Brett Kavanaugh vetting disturbs me greatly, as is the likely outcome — that he will be given a seat among the Supremes, regardless. We are seeing straight white men (with very willing female collaborators who have everything invested in the hegemony of straight white men) willing to do just about anything at all to lock in their power over everyone else in the world for the foreseeable future.
That many of the men involved in this enterprise are Catholic men with Catholic educations is beyond disturbing — should be beyond disturbing — to other American Catholics. This is ultimately all about the theological claim that straight white males are made in God's image in a unique way, because God is a straight white male writ large in the sky.
That claim will now be locked in at the level of the Supreme Court, with some very disastrous consequences for people of color, women, queer folks, immigrants, poor people, working- and middle-class citizens, and on and on. I feel down. And my energy levels are low as a result. Please bear with me if I pass over your comments, most of them, in silence for a while — and thank you for understanding.
